Clik here to view.Wikipedia defines Passion (from the Latin verb patī meaning to suffer) as a term applied to a very strong feeling about a person or thing; an intense emotion compelling, enthusiasm, or desire for anything. The term is also often applied to a lively or eager interest in or admiration for a proposal, cause, or activity or love – to a feeling of unusual excitement, enthusiasm or compelling emotion, a positive affinity or love, towards a subject.
Here is why you should care: I believe passion fuels that we tend to pay attention to, prioritize, get most excited about talking about, sharing, showing you pictures on our smart phones or tablets, inviting others to share or co-create experiences with us around, etc. Want to get to know someone in 2014? I mean really get to know them beyond the superficial facade that most of us put up about what we like, don’t like, etc.?
Find the ONE thing they’re really passionate about!
And don’t let them get away with a textbook answer, i.e. “my job!” Give me a break. That’s a mean to an end. I love what I do, but if I win the lottery tomorrow, I’m buying a one way ticket to Fiji. Don’t also take hobbies for an answer, i.e. Golf, fishing, or football. Hobbies are something you find to fill your time; passion you make time for despite of what else gets in the way. I also don’t believe you could really be passionate about 10 things!
So the next time you find yourself in the middle of one of those really boring small talks, stop and ask them what they’re passionate about. I guarantee you that they’ll smile ear to ear, glow, the tone of the conversation goes to a different level, and you’ll get a much stronger sense of who they really are!
I’ve found my passion for my family and anything on two wheels fuels a lot of what I do and why I do it. Travel 200 days a year – no problem; can’t wait to get home to see the family and go for a ride. Lock myself down and work on the next book for several days – no problem; I’ll get out of the writing cave and after hugs & kisses, will crank that V-Twin engine and feel the garage doors shake. Ask me about my family or my bikes and you’ll see passion first hand!
What are you passionate about? If you don’t have one, find it. If you’ve lost sight of it, get it back. Passion is the lifeline of great relationships!
